About Northbound Mail Systems
Northbound was founded in 2011 by a small group of infrastructure engineers who had spent the previous decade running email at hosting companies, ESPs and financial firms. The company remains privately held and engineer-led.
What we do
We design, provision and operate private email infrastructure for organisations whose sending profile makes shared platforms unworkable — either through volume, vertical, jurisdictional constraints, or the reputational cost of a filtered inbound. Alongside the infrastructure, we provide deliverability engineering as a continuous service: reputation management, inbox placement measurement, feedback loop processing, and incident response.
How we operate
Northbound is deliberately small. We keep the engineering team compact so that the same people who onboard a client are the ones on call three years later. Tenure is measured in years, not project cycles. Client relationships are structured as retainers because email infrastructure is not a workload that benefits from transactional billing.
We do not run a self-service dashboard, we do not publish pricing, and we do not accept every prospective client. These are not marketing positions. Each of them exists because the alternative — a self-service tier that would dilute reputation, a public price sheet that would attract volume-first buyers, an open door that would put us next to senders we could not defend — would make the platform worse for the clients already on it.
Where we are
The company is registered in the United Kingdom. Infrastructure is operated in colocation facilities in the United States (Ashburn, Los Angeles), the United Kingdom (London), the Netherlands (Amsterdam), Germany (Frankfurt), Switzerland (Zurich) and Singapore. IP allocations are announced under our own AS.
Who we work with
Our clients are marketing teams and sending operations at companies that treat email as revenue-critical infrastructure. Verticals include iGaming operators subject to UKGC, MGA and Curaçao licensing regimes; affiliate networks running direct-response programmes; regulated crypto exchanges and Web3 platforms; financial services and forex brokers; SaaS platforms with transactional volume; e-commerce brands with high-frequency lifecycle programmes; and other agencies and resellers that need a serious upstream.
What we do not do
We do not run open relays. We do not accept purchased or scraped lists. We do not send content designed to deceive recipients about its origin. We decline projects where the deliverability expectation is unrealistic given the content, the list, or the current infrastructure posture — because promising an outcome we cannot deliver damages every other client's reputation as well as ours.
Continuity
The engineers who founded Northbound still run it. There is no external investment, no board pressure to add features or tiers, and no growth model that requires diluting the service. The company's cadence is deliberately slow. Documents on this site are versioned; the current site is version 4.11, initially published in 2014 and revised continuously since.
Working with us
Every engagement starts with a scoping conversation with a deliverability engineer — usually 30 to 45 minutes on the phone or by encrypted messaging. We prefer to hear the sending profile in your words, discuss the constraints as we see them, and only then propose an infrastructure and operating envelope. This is included in the assessment and never billed.
